Airsoft: Realistic Military Simulation The sport of Airsoft is the newest and most exciting extreme sport, and also is a fun, more "updated" version of the classic paintball game, but with more of a "mil-sim" (military simulation) take on the outdated paintball game. If you have ever played paintball, then you of course understand the concept--no matter the "version" of the paintball game or the object of the game (capturing a flag or point of interest held by the opposing team, clearing a room, building, etc), the "concept of the concept" is to have great entertainment by shooting members of the opposing team with your marker, or paintball gun, which fires just that--hollow balls filled with brightly colored paint. In the sport of Airsoft, the concept remains much the same, but instead of a marker gun firing paintballs, the player relies on much more realistic gear, and in most cases the players' weapons very closely resemble actual firearms used by police units, SWAT teams, and especially real military soldiers from armies the world over. Furthermore, and depending on the price an Airsoft player is willing to pay for his or her equipment, the weapons can even be 1:1 scale full-metal replicas of actual military weapons, and many, many airsoft guns are officially licensed "training" versions of existing firearms complete with official markings and details of guns produced by such well-known manufacturers as Colt, Beretta, Browning, Sig Sauer, and more. Instead of firing balls of paint, these high-quality Airsoft guns fire 6mm ammunition made from materials ranging from light to heavy plastic and even aluminum. Also, most players prefer a "primary" or main gun that is capable of firing on semi- or fully automatic mode at up to and above 800 RPM (rounds per minute) and anywhere from 300 to 600+ FPS (feet per second). These automatic primary weapons can be powered by a strong motor with a powerful battery to facilitate the full-auto function and are called AEGs (Automatic Electric Guns). Most players carry at least one "secondary" or backup weapon so that they won't be caught unarmed or unprepared in the event of a primary weapon jamming or becoming weaker or slower due to a dying battery (though a good battery can last for an entire day of skirmishing in most cases), and this secondary weapon can be a smaller automatic weapon, a pump shotgun that may fire a single round for each pump or perhaps a three-round burst per pump, or the backup might be a more traditional pistol or revolver powered by a quality spring or even CO2, "green gas" (canned propellant similar in molecular composition to propane), or maybe even propane itself, with the gases being stored in either the familiar co2 canister common to many traditonal bb or pellet guns, or the gas could be stored in the magazine (clip) of the pistol along with the 6mm ammunition. As in the case of the popular AEG, the shotguns, pistols/revolvers, etc can range in quality and price from the less powerful, lower quality "starter" versions made of plastic or ABS polymer all the way up to high-quality, high-powered replicas fully constructed of metal and featuring realistic recoil and in some cases even the ultra-realistic "blowback" action of an actual firearm, where the weapons slide blows backward from the pressure of the escaping gas, simulating the shell-ejecting action of a "real steel" real world firearm.
